Welcome address of the Mayor of the City of Rijeka

It is my great pleasure to invite you to Rijeka, the host town of the 8th International Symposium on Maritime Health, which will be held in May 2005.

The Mediterranean town with a Middle-European soul. This is how we can describe Rijeka, the biggest Croatian port, economic, university and cultural centre with 150000 people and accelerated development. It is the town of rich historical, natural and cultural inheretage, surrounded by one of the most developed tourist areas in Croatia. If you decide to come, I believe you will discover the town with the exciting maritime past, a part of which is treasured in the Maritime History Museum, town streets, shops and our quayside.

Even the symbol of Rijeka - the famous Moretto - worn as an earring by seafarers and fishermen, is connected with the turbulent past of our town.

If you come to Rijeka, I do not doubt you will find out that it is a modern, busy town which lives day and night. It is the town with the ambitious development plans, primarily focused not only on the sea, port and maritime affairs, but also on tourism, culture and services.

That is why I look forward to your coming, strongly convinced that you will find motivating environment for your work, exchange of experience, and socializing.
